China Related Activities

Provost and Vice President (academic) of the U of A, Dr. Carl Amrhein, led a university delegation to China (July 29-Aug 12). While in Beijing, Dr. Amrhein met with his counterparts at Tsinghua University, China Agricultural University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and a number of leading Chinese energy corporations. The delegation also visited Xi’an Jiaotong University and Northwest Agricultural & Forestry University in Xi’an as well as Shandong University in Jinan. Dr. Amrhein signed a series of agreements with university partners to further promote collaboration and student exchange. Dr. David Lynch, Dean of Engineering, Dr. John Kennelly, Dean of the Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, Director Gordon Houlden and Ms. Jia Wang from the China Institute, Dr. Cen Huang from University of Alberta International and Dr. Qingxia Liu of Engineering took part in the visit.

 

Calgary Economic Development in partnership with the China Institute hosted a luncheon and keynote address on Chinese Investment in Canada and Its Implications for Alberta on August 19. Over forty participants attended this sold-out event where Mme. LIU Yongfeng, Consul General, Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Calgary and China Institute’s Director Gordon Houlden delivered keynote speeches.

 

Sponsored by the China Institute, Canadian Centre for Clean Coal/Carbon and Mineral Processing Technologies (C5MPT) held a two-day workshop on Aug 25-26 at the University of Alberta. Participants from the U of A, industry partners and the Alberta government took part in the presentations and discussions on clean coal technologies and carbon capture and storage. CEO’s from Capital Power and SwanHills delivered keynote speeches.

 

In July, invited by the US Department of State and the US Pacific Command, Dr. Nong Hong, post-doc fellow at the China Institute attended the 2011 Symposium “Managing the global commons: the geopolitical dynamic between the region’s major powers” on East Asia Security (SEAS) as an expert on the law of the sea and the South China Sea dispute.

  • The China Institute, in partnership with Alberta Institute for American Studies and the Canadian Circumpolar Institute will organize a workshop on maritime security issues on Sep 22-23. Academics and officials from Canada, China, the US, Vietnam, the Philippines and Australia will attend. For more information, or to register, click here.

 

  • On September 8, 2011, the Canada West Foundation and the Asia Pacific Foundation will host the Canada-Asia Energy Cooperation Conference, held in conjunction with the 7th Annual Canada-China Energy & Environment Forum. Click here for more information.

 

  • The China Institute’s post-doc fellow, Dr. Nong Hong’s manuscript based on her doctoral thesis has been accepted by Routledge. The book entitled “UNCLOS and Ocean Dispute Settlement: Law and Politics in the South China Sea” is expected to be published in 2012.
